| I The Zikr or Invocation of Allah (Subhanahu) |
 |
The zikr has a predominant importance in the teachings of Sayidina Limamu Lahi ( P.B.O.H.)
It is a very common practice in the Layene community. Very often gatherings are held by dahiras or other groups of people on every occasion to sing religious songs glorifying their Creator ,by proclaiming His oneness and His eminent attributes. It is the most distinctive aspects of the disciples of Sayidina Limamu Lahi ( P.B.O.H.) He always kept saying: “Never neglect glorifying your creator wherever you are, for the invocation of Allah (subhanahu) decreases the evil deeds and increases the good ones . Always meditate the miracles of Allah the Almighty (subhanahu) such as the creation of the earth and the skies. He has ordered us to always remember Him. He said: ‘Often repeat the Name of Allah and glorify him morning and evening.
But it is recommended to strictly respect the rules of discipline that go with the zikr. The Almighty says: “ Recite what is revealed to you of the Book and perform regular prayers , for regular prayers restrain from shameful and evil deeds. Surely the remembrance of Allah is the greatest thing , and Allah know what you do. (surat 29 , verse 45) .
From this injunction we understand that the zikr has such importance that its practice requires the respect of the same rules as for the prayers.
Among all the formulas used in the zikr Sayidina Limamu Lahi (P.B.O.H.) the best: ”La ilaha illa Laha Muhammadu Rasulu Lahi;( there is no divinity but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger).
It is the greatest formula according to the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.O.H.). He said to his companions: ”From Adam to me no prophet has come with a more sublime invocation.”
When one considers the religious practices of his community one can say that Sayiduna Limamu (P.B.O.H.) has taken Sufism to perfection; and by enjoining his disciples to worship God with the same zeal as saints would do , he has even brought a new dimension to the doctrine: mass Sufism. That is why he always insisted on the practice of zikr in mass . Therefore all Layenes wherever they live must come together in dahiras or other forms of association (daras) to learn their religion and sing together to glorify their Creator (subhanahu) and His venerated Messenger (P.B.O.H.).
The benefits of the Zikr
The benefits drawn from the practice of zikr are immense. The Messenger of Allah (subhanahu) said: “No assembly of people come together to invoke Allah, exalted be his name and only for his face without a herald calling from the sky: “ Rise up and get your sins forgiven and your evil deeds changed into good deeds. Heaven is the reward of those who remember their Lord.”
Other hadiths confirm this: Abdallah Ibn Umar reported: “ I asked the Prophet (P.B.O.H.)’Oh Apostle of God! What are the benefits drawn from the practice of zikr in a group ?’ his answer was:’ Heaven.”
Abu Said Al Qudri and Abu Hurayra also reported: “There is no group of people sitting and invoking
Allah without angels surrounding them, carrying God’s divine Mercy and His sublime Peace. Allah shall remember that group among His servants.”
When the Prophet (P.B.O.H.) was again asked: “ What is the best of actions?” He said: “ Never stop refreshing your tongue with the invocation of Allah until death takes your unaware.”
The zikr expels anxiety from the soul and appeases the heart. Allah (subhanahu) said: “…and those whose hearts are appeased by the remembrance of Allah; Or are hearts not appeased by the remembrance of Allah ?”
Again Abu Said Al Qudri reported: Someone asked the Prophet (P.B.O.H.) “ Who are those who will be nearest to God on Judgement Day ?” he replied : “Those who have most often remembered their Lord.”
Again from Abu Said Al Qudri : Umm Annas asked him: “Oh Messenger of Allah give me good advice!
“Give up disobeying God, it is the best act of piety. Strictly conform to religious obligations, it is the best form of jihad, and multiply the remembrance of Allah for none of your acts can draw to you God’s love better than the multiplication of the zikr.”
Then the believer who often chants the glorious names of Allah (subhanahu) gets His love

| II PURIFICATION |
 |
1 – Internal purification
It consists in purifying the soul from impurities, sins and disobedience by sincere repentance, and in cleaning the heart from polytheism , doubt, rancour, deceit, arrogance and ostentation by multiplying religious practices such as zikr , prayers and fasting.
Sayiduna Limamu (P.B.O.H.) said in his sermons: Purify yourselves, and get clean ; there are water and soap in this world . I enjoin you in this world to purify yourselves by multiplying the invocations of Allah all the time, by often reading the Holy Quran , by multiplying the prayers on the Prophet, by always advising people to do good deeds and avoid bad deeds, by always meditating on God’s marvels in the creation of the skies , the earth, the mountains, the plants, the seas, the rivers and everything.
If you want Salvation purify your worship of God for the sake of God and His messenger. Be constant on these practices even when there are few.
If you want Salvation, do good actions , multiply the invocations of Allah at every moment, regret your omissions , and purify your properties by giving alms , by giving help to parents and relatives.
2 – External purification
It is twofold: the purification of clothes and places of worship on one hand and the purification of the body by washing and ablution on the other hand.
In the teachings of Sayidina Limamu Lahi (P.B.O.H.) a Muslim must always be purified when he prays, when he makes the tawwaf around the Kahba and when he reads the Holy Quran.
The causes of impurity and the conditions and modalities of purification are common to all Muslims, but in the teachings of Sayidina Limamu, there are some particular dispositions to respect when performing the ablution and the washing.
How to perform ablutions
Sit facing the Qibla if possible
Recite Fatiha after Fatiha during all the process
Wash all parts concerned three times
Wash feet and legs up to the knees.
Avoid speaking during the process if possible.
When washing the feet and legs, always begin by the big toe on each foot.
Purification of the body
It consists of two parts:
Washing off impurities: particular dispositions:
After Bismi Lahi Rahmani Rahimi ,Ahuzu bi Lahi mina Shaytani Rajimi la Hawla wa la quwwata illa bi Lahil Aliyil Azim, express the intention of removing impurities.
Then wash both hands up to the wrists ;
Wash from the navel to the knees through the sex and the thighs.
Again wash both hands to the wrists.
Wash the head, the face, the beard, the ears and the neck.
Then divide the body into four parts:
Wash the left side of the body from shoulder to toes and the arm to fingers
Do the same for the left side.
Wash the front side of the body from the neck to the toes through the chest, the stomach and the sex.
Then wash the back side from the neck to the heels, through the back and the buttocks.
Cleansing and ablution
-After Bismi Lahi Rahmani Rahimi, ’Ahuzu bi Lahi mina Shaytani Rajimi la Hawla wa la quwwata illa bi Lahi Aliyi Azim express the intention of cleansing and performing ablution jointly.
- Perform regular ablution by washing each part three times, including the neck, and excepting the feet , while reciting Fatiha after Fatiha.
- Then divide the body again into four parts and wash the right side from head to feet while reciting Fatiha after Fatiha and wash the leg again to the knee to complete the ablution.
- Do the same for the left side of the body,
- Then wash the front side from the middle of the head to the navel then wash the back from the middle of the head to the waist.
After that take some water with the right hand and recite over it: Bismi Lahi Rahmani Rahimi Alhamdu lil Lahi Rabbil ‘Alamina Laa Ilaha Illa Lahu Muhammadu Rasulu Lahi Salla Lahu ‘Alayhi wa sallama. Allahumma salli ala Sayidina Muhammadin wa sallim. Hasbiyal Lahu Allahu Akbar; then pour it on the head.
Then with both hands press the temples hard, then press the forehead and the rear of the head.
Sayidina Limamu Lahi (P.B.O.H.) said:” Whoever performs the purification in this way is clean and purified from all sins.” Baye Lahi (P.B.O.H.) recommended to say Bismi Lahi Rahmani Rahimi before Ahuzu bi Lahi mina Shaytani Rajimi . It appears more logical to invoke Allah before asking his protection against Shaytan.
Sayiduna Limamu was so concerned with the cleanness of the environment that he forbade that domestic animals such as chickens be left to wander freely because their defecations soil the place and render it unclean for prayers. The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.O.H.) said :” Allah has stretched the earth as a carpet for my community” and also, as Bukhari and Tirmizi reported from a hadit “All the earth is a worship-place .”

| III The prayer |
 |
The prayer is a divine obligation for the Muslim; it is the second pillar of Islam.
Allah ( subhaanahu) said :”The prayer is a prescribed obligation for all believers and is due on prescribed hours.”
Sayidina Limamu Lahi (P.B.O.H.) said in his sermons: ”Tire your body by performing prayers and fasting. I enjoin you to perform regular prayers; the first thing that you will asked on Judgement Day is the practice of prayers and the respect of its rules and conditions.”
He recommended to practise some zikr before praying, by chanting “La Ilaha illa Lah, la Ilaha illa Lah, Sayidina Rasulu Lahi La Ilaha illa Lah several times before the Iqaamat.
The conditions and rules of prayers are common to all Muslims but there are particular formulas that Sayidina Limamu has recommended to recite at various positions:
In the rukko say: Aamanaa bi Lahi wa rasuulihi
Standing after rukko : Samiha Laahu liman hamidahu then Allahumma rabbanaa wa lakal hamdu.
In the sujjud : Subhanaka innii amantu bi Laahi wa malaikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wa yawmil akhiri.
Sitting after sujjud: Amanaa bi Lahi wa rasuulihi.
After the salam say: La Ilaha illa Lahu Muhammadu Rasulu Lahi salla Lahu alayhi wa sallama, three times, then: Allahumma salli ala Sayidina Muhammadin wa sallim, three times.
Then formulate prayers for yourself and your family beginning by the following words:
Tabaarakta wa tahaalayta ya zaal djalaali wal ikraami, Nasrun mina Laahi wa fathun qariibun wa bashiril muuminiina. Thabatnaa Lahu ala jamahatil muslimiina. Thabatnaa Lahu alal iimaani wal islaami . Thabatnaa Lahu ala taahati Laahi wa rasuulihi.
Then continue saying prayers in any language that you know. Finish prayers with the following words:
Allahumma thabatnaa bi kalimati laa ilaaha illa Laahu Muhammudu Rasulu Lahi Salla Laahu alayhi wa sallama. Allahumma salli ’alaa Sayidina Muhammadin wa sallim .
It is recommended after that to recite the following verses:
-Al Fatiha (3 times)- Al Ikhlaas (3 times)- Salaatul Fatiha (3 times) then follow with other prayers addressed to the Creator
The Tasbih
Baye Lahi (P.B.O.H.) recommended to recite the tasbih after every regular prayer. He insisted on its importance . He has chosen the following formulas to recite with a rosary:
1-Bismi Laahi Rahmani Rahiimi (100 times)
2- Al hamdu li Laahi rabbil ’Aalamina (100 times)
3- Walaa dhalliina Amiin (100 times)
4- Amiin (100 times).
It is recommended to conclude the tasbih with the following formula:
-Inna Laaha wa malaaikatihi yusalluuna ala Nabiyi yaa ayuhal laziina aamanuu salluu alayhi wa sallimuu tasliiman
-Sallaa Laahu alayhi wa alaa aalihi wa abbii wa ummii wa zawdjatii wa waladii wa zuriyatii wa sallama tasliiman
-Subhaana rabbika rabbil ’izzati ’amma yasufuuna wa sallamun alal mursaliina wal hamdu li Laahi Rabbil ’aalamiina
Allahumma nadjjinaa mahan naadjiina wa laa tuhliknaa mahal haalikiina saffan sannaa wal mulku daaimu Imamul mursaliina.
Bi hurmati laa ilaaha illa Laahu Muhammadu Rasuulu Lahi sala Laahu alayhi wa sallama
Allahumma salli alaa Saydinaa Muhammadin wa sallim. Amiin
Prayer hours
Sayiduna Limamu (P.B.O.H.) used to say in wolof :”Timis kukk fadjar naññ meaning that the timis prayer (or maghrib) must be done when obscurity is complete and the fadjar or subhu when obscurity has completely disappeared..
Sayidina Issa Ruhulahi (P.O.H.) said that Layenes should perform prayers at least half an hour later than non-Layenes and one hour later for Zuhr and ‘Asr prayers. Many people who have lived in Sayidina Issa’s time have given testimony to confirm the late prayer times, such as Libasse Wade, Seydi Wade, both sons of Elimane Muhammadu Wade imam of the mosque of Camberene since Sayidina Issa’s time, Libasse Sall, El Hadj Issa Seck imam of the Layene mosque of Dakar, Abdulahi Ndoye of Ndingala, etc…
Nafila prayers in Ramadan
Ramadan nafila prayers are performed after the ishaa prayer. It is composed of two rakkas followed by shafaa and witr. During the first 15 nights recite Fatiha +30 Al Ikhlaas in each rakka and during the rest of the month recite fatiha + 15 Al Ikhlaas.
It is recommended to pray Ramadan nafilas in group. |
